Be Careful Not to Take More Than You Can Chew
Eating is one of the most enjoyable things that we do. In many countries, eating together marks some of the very important occasions in the lives of their members. From the birth of a child to someone´s death, there will surely be food on the table. So surely, there will be a very big problem when we have swallowing problems. This condition is called dysphagia.
This condition is characterised by difficulty in swallowing. Though the occurrence of pain may make swallowing difficult too, this is not considered dysphagia. Most of the time, those who suffer this kind of problem that the food gets stuck into the throat.
When goes untreated, dysphagia can cause other more severe problems. Since the body is having difficulty in food intake, one can suffer dehydration, malnutrition and failure of some organs. Sometimes, choking occurs. And when this happen frequently, it can have fatal results.
Dysphagia can be a result of many things. Sometimes, it is psychological. But at times, it can be caused by some problems or malformations inside the body, for example the Chiari Malformation. Since the malformation is mainly congenital, this can have serious results to the child´s eating habits.
The Chiari Malformation happens when the area at the lower back portion of the head didn´t develop enough. This causes the Cerebral Tonsils to be misplaced thus putting pressure to the area surrounding it. And every time that a person tries to swallow something, he will have a sensation that the food is stuck into his neck.
As the Chiari syndrome affects the central nervous system, other more serious forms of dysphagia may be experienced. Sometimes, people may experience drooling (or overproduction of saliva). In some cases, people may even lose the ability to initiate the process of swallowing. This happens at advanced forms of the disease.
It is therefore best to have the problem diagnosed as early as possible. Try to be more observant to the symptoms and do not ignore them. The earlier that we know it, the better solution we can give to our children and family members. Don´t wait until it is too late.
